Abstract

Visual impairment remains a major public health problem among underprivileged communities with limited access to eye care services. This community-based program aimed to improve eye health awareness and conduct early detection of visual disorders among parents of tutoring center students in Tangerang, Indonesia. The activity involved 55 participants and included interviews, questionnaires, visual acuity examinations, autorefractor assessments, subjective refraction tests, and eye health education. The results showed that most participants were female (92.7%) and aged 30–49 years (74.5%). The most common complaint was blurred vision (43.6%), while 47.3% reported no symptoms. However, examinations revealed that refractive errors were the most common condition (63.6%), followed by presbyopia (29.1%). Several participants without complaints were also found to have visual impairments requiring further attention. The program demonstrated that community-based eye screening can effectively identify undiagnosed visual disorders and improve public awareness regarding preventive eye health in vulnerable urban communities.
