Abstract

Hypertension remains one of the leading non-communicable diseases contributing significantly to global morbidity and mortality. Successful hypertension control depends not only on pharmacological therapy but also on patients' ability to perform sustainable self-management. Existing health education programs generally emphasize cognitive aspects and often fail to strengthen patients' intrinsic motivation to maintain healthy behaviors. This community service program aimed to improve hypertension self-management through Spiritual Capital-based health education. The program employed a Community-Based Health Education (CBHE) approach using participatory learning methods. Fifteen hypertensive patients living in RT 04 RW 06 Ledok Kulon Village, within the working area of Wisma Indah Primary Health Center, Bojonegoro Regency, participated in the program. The intervention consisted of two educational sessions including hypertension education, Spiritual Capital activation, diaphragmatic breathing exercises using the 4–7–8 technique, spiritual reflection, group discussions, and evaluation through pre-test and post-test. The findings of this study indicate that participants were able to actively and successfully practice diaphragmatic breathing exercises. There was a notable improvement in their knowledge of hypertension, the importance of self-management, and the role of spiritual values as a source of motivation for maintaining health. Although behavioral changes could not be fully observed due to the relatively short duration of the mentoring program, the results of the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of < 0.001, indicating a significance level lower than 0.05 (p < 0.05). Therefore, it can be concluded that there was a statistically significant difference between the participants' conditions before (pre-test) and after (post-test) receiving the Spiritual Capital-Based Health Education intervention. These findings demonstrate that the intervention effectively enhanced the self-management abilities of participants with hypertension.
